How mobile mechanics work
A mobile mechanic is a qualified vehicle technician who travels to your location — home, workplace or roadside — and carries out repairs, servicing and diagnostics from a fully equipped van instead of a fixed garage. The work and the qualifications are the same as a workshop; only the premises are missing.
Around nine out of ten common jobs: full and interim servicing, diagnostics, brakes, batteries, alternators, starter motors, suspension components, belts, filters, cooling system repairs, gaskets and non-starters. The main exceptions are jobs that need a vehicle lift (clutches, gearboxes), four-wheel laser alignment, air-con regassing, and the MOT test itself. See all mobile mechanic services.
No — and be wary of anyone who claims otherwise. UK law requires MOT tests to be conducted at a DVSA-approved test centre. What we do instead is a pre-MOT inspection at your home, fix the common failure points in advance, and arrange the official test for you at an approved centre. Read GOV.UK MOT rules.
Not for the whole job. Many customers hand over keys, work from home or head out, and get a walkthrough of the completed work at the end. For diagnostics, being available for the first ten minutes helps — describing the symptom to the technician directly speeds up an accurate diagnosis.
Pricing and payment
Usually, yes — typically noticeably cheaper than a main dealer and competitive with a good independent garage, because there's no premises overhead built into the labour rate. The bigger saving is often the hidden one: no recovery costs, no taxis, no lost half-days delivering and collecting the car.
You describe the job (or the symptoms), we confirm the parts and labour required, and you receive a written, itemised price before booking. That figure is what you pay. If we discover additional work mid-job, we stop, show you, and quote it separately — nothing extra is ever done or charged without your approval.
No hidden ones. Your fixed quote covers the visit and the work described. Emergency callouts are quoted on the phone before we dispatch, and the phone price is the final price.
On completion, once you've seen the finished work — by card, bank transfer or cash. Fleet and business accounts can arrange consolidated monthly invoicing instead.
Because real diagnosis is skilled work with expensive equipment — a proper multi-module scan with dealer-level tooling, live data checks and root-cause reasoning, not a basic code reader. If we repair the fault on the same visit, the diagnostic fee is deducted from the repair price.
Qualifications, insurance and trust
Every SW Mechanics technician is certified through the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) and is background-checked before joining. Ask to see credentials when booking or on arrival; showing them is policy, not a favour. Meet the team.
Yes — fully insured, including public liability, covering the work, your vehicle and your property while we're on site. Proof of insurance is available on request.
Our 4.9-star average comes from 500+ reviews on Google, where reviews are tied to real accounts and we can't edit or delete them. Several name the exact jobs done — including major servicing and rocker cover gasket replacement on Range Rover SVRs.
Every repair carries a 12-month parts and labour warranty. If a part we fitted or work we did fails within the year, contact us and we return to fix it at no cost. If we can't put it right, we refund you.
Parts, warranties and quality
Yes. Vans carry stock of the most common parts (batteries, pads, filters, belts, bulbs), and job-specific parts are sourced for your exact vehicle — identified by registration — before the visit.
OE-quality: parts made to the same specification as the ones your car left the factory with, from established manufacturers. This is also what keeps your manufacturer warranty intact.
Often, yes — tell us at booking so the technician can confirm suitability. Customer-supplied parts carry their own retailer warranty; our 12-month parts-and-labour warranty applies when we supply the part. On safety-critical items like brakes, we'll decline parts we can't verify.
No. Under UK/EU block exemption rules, your warranty remains valid provided servicing follows the manufacturer's schedule with appropriate-quality parts. We follow the schedule exactly, stamp the book and update digital service records where manufacturers allow access.
We service and repair conventional systems on hybrids and take on EV work within the scope that's safe outside a workshop. High-voltage battery and drivetrain work needs specialist facilities — if your job crosses that line, we'll say so at the quote stage.
Bookings, timings and coverage
Same-day is often possible for morning enquiries, and next-day is typical for planned work. Emergency breakdowns are dispatched immediately, 24/7, with a 45-minute average arrival across our core Grays, Thurrock and East London coverage.
We're based in Grays, Essex and cover Thurrock, wider Essex and East/South-East London daily — including Tilbury, Basildon, Romford, Barking and Dagenham. WhatsApp your postcode for a yes or no within minutes.
Yes — office car parks are one of our most common job sites. You'll need permission if it's managed parking, and enough room around the vehicle for a technician to operate safely.
We tell you straight away, before costs mount. Some jobs need a lift or specialist equipment; we explain the options and can arrange the workshop booking so you still only deal with one company.
Practical questions
Light rain, yes — technicians carry canopy cover for most jobs. Severe weather can force a reschedule for safety. If weather threatens your slot, we contact you proactively.
A standard driveway or parking bay with roughly a metre of clear space around the car is enough for most jobs. If you're unsure, send a photo by WhatsApp and we'll confirm.
Yes. Old parts are taken away for correct disposal or recycling, surfaces are protected during the job, and the space is left as we found it.
Ask it — WhatsApp or call us, Mon–Sat 7am–9pm (emergencies 24/7), or use the contact form. Useful questions get added to this page. Book online in 60 seconds.
